Englishman Chris Woakes and Bangladeshi Tamim Iqbal are both joining the Hell Wellington Firebirds for their upcoming Twenty20 campaign.
Woakes, 23, will join the Firebirds in time for their Plunket Shield match on 26 November, and will play the remaining eight HRV Cup Twenty20 matches throughout December and January, plus finals.
The playing schedule this summer means that Woakes will also be available for three Plunket Shield matches during his time in Wellington.
Cricket Wellington Director of Cricket Robbie Kerr said he is delighted to secure such an exciting young talent, and believes that Woakes’ all-round abilities will add plenty of firepower to the Firebirds.
“Chris is well known in cricket as a player with a bright future. He is an athletic quick bowler and a very capable middle order batsman. He’s played both Twenty20 and ODI cricket for England, and displays a mature head under pressure. We think he’s a great addition to our squad.”
Woakes has just completed a strong season for Warwickshire, contributing with both bat and ball to their winning the Division One County Championship.
Tamim, also 23, will be available for the Firebirds’ Twenty20 campaign from their fourth-round match against the Otago Volts in Dunedin on 23 December.
Tamim was the 2010 Wisden Cricketer magazine's test player of the year. Left handed batsman Tamim is regarded as one of the hot tickets of Bangladeshi cricket and has packed 160 international cricket matches into his career already, including 113 ODIs and 24 Tests.
He toured New Zealand in 2010 with the Tigers and averages a respectable 38 intests, and in 23 Twenty 20 internationals averages 20 at a strike rate of 102.Chris Woakes' Cricinfo profile: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/247235.html
