Wellington Girls Win NZCT tournament
Wellington Girls College have successfully gone through to the finals of the NZCT Secondary Schools tournament to be held later this year in Palmerston North.
In the early game, Wellington Girls got a fright with the girls from Wainuiomata batting first and posting 125 without loss. Gemma Krebs scored a fine 58* and was supported well by Jade Humphrey with 40 not out. In reply, Wellington Girls got to the target with 3 balls to spare with a fine 50 from Umaya Ranaweera.
Sacred Heart played Tawa in the other morning game and put Tawa into bat. Tawa scored 138 for 6 with Danielle Watson top scoring with 33. In reply, Scared Heart could only muster 108 for 9 with Jess Lewis top scoring with 32. Katie Blair took 4 for 9 off her four overs for Tawa.
In the Final, Wellington Girls batted first against Tawa and got to 151 for 3 with another fine knock of 49* from Umaya Ranaweera and 32 from captain Thamsyn Newton. It was too much for Tawa who tried very hard but could only get through to 103 with Makaylah Mason-Jones top scoring with 42.
The two teams will again meet in the College Sport Final this Tuesday with Tawa seeking some revenge.
Wainuiomata and Sacred Heart played for third and fourth, with Sacred Heart winning in the 19th over. However Wainui showed how far they team has come and played well throughout the two days of competition.
