Wellington beat Canterbury in Provincial A opener

Wellington’s opening batsmen laid the platform for their 49-run win over Canterbury in the first round of the Provincial A tournament  at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln on Wednesday.

Wellington’s Ben Orton scored the only century of the day across all three games and finished unbeaten on 105 off 115 balls. With Josh Brodie (95), he put on 202 for the opening wicket to guarantee his side the points in a weather-shortened contest.

Wellington won the toss and elected to bowl first, bowling Canterbury out for 233 inside 47 overs. Malaesaili Tugaga took 3 for 23 off 8.1 overs and Harry Boam 3 for 54 off 10 overs.

In reply Orton and Brodie all but steered Wellington to their revised target, Brodie falling towards the end and Wellington finishing on 211 for 1.

In other day one results, Otago beat Northern Districts in a thriller and Central Districts beat defending champions Auckland.
