Hutt Valley has made a promising start to their Tararua Shield campaign with an emphatic 216 run win over Wairarapa at Rathkearle College on Sunday.
Having won the toss, captain Mark Houghton elected to bat which proved to be the right decision as Hutt pounded the Wairarapa bowlers all over the park to be bowled out in the 50th over for 389 runs. Taita Batsmen Henry Walsh was the star of the show scoring a quick fire 123 from just 81 balls. Batting at 6, the New Zealand Under 19 representative hit the ball to all parts in an innings that included 12 fours and 7 sixes. Once Walsh was dismissed, Hutt Districts Darren Cudby continued the fireworks by smashing a 42 ball 71.
Earlier, the tone was set by Hutt District batsman Fraser Colson who scored a fast paced 56 from 44 balls, whiles Taita duo Phil Tunnicliffe and Mark Houghton made some handy contributions in the middle overs.
Rain reduced the second innings with Wairarapa requiring 307 from 34 overs to win the match. They were eventually bowled out for 91 handing Hutt a bonus point win. The Valley’s bowlers bowled tidily with Houghton picking up 3-8 from 5 overs, all of which were caught and bowled.
