University and Karori are the joint frontrunners after this weekend’s fourth round set of Premier Wilkinson Ewen Chatfield Cup one-day matches.
University and Karori (both on 16 points) enjoyed wins over Johnsonville and Naenae Old Boys respectively, and hold a one-point lead to third placed Eastern Suburbs (15) who beat the Wellington U20s in Sunday’s game.
All games on Saturday were weather-affected, but only the Wellington Collegians-Taita match failed to get underway due to problems taking the covers off.
University continued their great start to the season by defeating Johnsonville by 40 runs to earn a bonus point win. Karori clinched a 38-run win over Naenae in their match, while Easts beat the Wellington U20s by two wickets in chasing down the U20’s 198 with an over to spare.
Petone-Eastbourne have moved into fourth place (on 14 points) by earning a convincing 8-wicket win over Wainuiomata.
Onslow and Upper Hutt had their first wins of the season but in different circumstances.
Onslow convincingly beat Hutt District thanks to a magnificent all-round performance from skipper Liam Chrisp. He took 7 for 16 from 7.4 overs as Hutt were dismissed for 135 and then he scored an unbeaten 32 to help his side win by 8 wickets. Chrisp’s bowling restricted Hutt and then with Barry Rhodes (61) added an unbroken 94 for the Onslow win.
Firebird Dane Hutchinson had a good all round match but that didn’t help North City as they lost on run rate to Upper Hutt in a shortened game. Hutchinson scored 31 and then took 4 for 12. Ollie Newton took 5 for 22 for Upper Hutt.
University batted first against Johnsonville, making 183 for 3. Matthew Lewis hit the highest score of the day getting an unbeaten 96. Johnsonville made 144 with Elliott Borren taking 5 for 9 from just 4.2 overs.
Chris Spring hit 54 as Karori got 194 for 8and then dismissed Naenae for 156. Jarred Sewell and Misty Jones-Middleton both took three wickets.
Wainuiomata could only make 111 against Petone-Eastbourne with Ben Saunders snaring 4 for 19. Captain Nick Ward was 60 not out when the amalgamated club won by 8 wickets.
Chrisp’s bowling restricted Hutt and then with Barry Rhodes added an unbroken 94 for the Onslow win.
On Sunday, Easts bowled the U20s out for 198 in 47 overs, a score boosted by Corey Larsen’s unbeaten 92 off 87 balls. Seb Logan took 4 for 30 for Easts. Ronald Karaitiana (45), Scott Golder (40) and Ben Orton (35) all got amongst the runs for Easts in a well-timed run chase.
Women's Senior club cricket failed to get underway due to the inclement weather.
