Sri Lanka hit back

Kumar Sangakkara has belted an impressive century to guide Sri Lanka to a comfortable 78-run victory over Bangladesh at Chittagong Divisional Stadium and a 2-1 win in their one-day series.

The vice captain helped bury the hosts under an avalanche of runs with his 109, as Sri Lanka set Bangladesh a target of 310 for victory.

Bangladesh put in a spirited effort, but was restricted to 9-231 in reply.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Bangladesh had a brilliant start, reducing Sri Lanka to 2-18 from nine overs, with Upal Tharanga (0) and Sanath Jaysuriya (4) both falling to medium pacer Mashrafe Mortaza.

But that brought Sangakkara to the crease, who combined with Mahela Jayawardene (51) for a 75-run third-wicket stand, and then Kaushal Lokuarachchi (69) for a 104-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Mohammad Rafique finally claimed the scalps of all three to finish with 3-61, but Sri Lanka had already mounted a formidable total.

Mohammad Ashraful was the best of the Bangladesh batsmen, reaching 64, but was largely waging a lone battle as debutant seamer Dammika Prasad and spinners Lokuarachchi and Tillekaratne Dilshan bagged two wickets each.

The two sides will now play a two-Test series before Sri Lanka returns home following a lengthy tour in Australia as well.
