New Zealand Cricket Fans have their say

Thousands of cricket fans across the country have had their say with Brendon McCullum emerging as the inaugural winner of the New Zealand Cricket Fans Choice Award.

The BLACKCAPS batting star’s breathtaking 116 not out against Australia was selected as the most outstanding performance, beating other notable efforts by Shane Bond, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor and Peter McGlashan

McCullum was honoured at The National Bank Awards Dinner with fan Jayden “Barney” Barnaby handing over the trophy.

Thousands of registered fans and KIWICAPS voted online and went into the draw to present the prize with 11-year old winner saying: “I can’t believe it, the whole experience was amazing.

“I’m thought Brendon McCullum deserved the award and I’m glad I voted for him.”

McCullum said he was “humbled and overwhelmed” to be recognised by the supporters.

''Obviously it is an amazing honour to win an award that is chosen by the cricket fans,” McCullum said.

“I thought all the other performances were outstanding and deserved to be recognised.  To be honest, I was really surprised when my name was called out.

“Any opportunity to engage with our fans is great so it was pretty special to be handed the trophy by young Jayden.”
