Karori win outright on Saturday; Easts still frontrunners

Karori came back from the brink to beat Wellington Collegians and register the only outright win of the third round of the Wilkinson Pearce Cup on Saturday, while in the Wilkinson Hazlett Trophy there were outright wins to Petone-Eastbourne, Johnsonville and Upper Hutt.

Karori won their Pearce Cup match against Collegians after being dismissed for just 87 in their first innings and being asked to follow on 149 runs behind.

Batting a second time they reined in the deficit and went on to make 303 for 8, setting Collegians 155 to win. They then bundled Collegians out for just 138 to win by 16 runs in the last over of the match.

Karori had started the day on 39 for 3 in reply to Collegians’ first day score of 236 and were quickly rolled by Clinton Butler (4 for 30) and Julian Brown (4 for 47). Batting a second time, Chris Spring made 116 for Karori and Jarred Sewell chimed in with an unbeaten 63 from 39 balls. Butler took another four wickets and his match haul was 8 for 79.

Five of Collegians’ top order made starts in their run chase,  but none could kick on and Karori completed a stunning 16-run victory to cement second place on the Pearce Cup points table. Lee Edwards was the main destroyer, taking 5 for 37.

Pearce Cup leaders Eastern Suburbs resumed on day two at 113 for 4 against Onslow in reply to 278. They went on to make 347 thanks to 146 from Karaitiana. James Bannatyne took 4 for 86 for Onslow.  Onslow reached 114 for 7 by the close with Ricky Joseph taking all seven of their second innings wickets - 7 for 74.

Heading into day two, Taita were 53 for 1 in reply to University’s 305. Thanks  to 88 from Henry Walsh and 93 from Mark Houghton they closed at 341, giving them a first innings lead of  36. Matt Sadd - who was a replacement player - took 6 for 44. University had limped to 39 for 5 when stumps were drawn.

Individual highlights of the Hazlett Trophy included  David Hudson finishing with 6 for 41 for Johnsonville, Ian McPeake taking 6 for 42 and also making 61 not out off just 21 balls for Hutt District, and Craig James taking a hat-trick for Naenae Old Boys.

After the completion of third round matches in the Hazlett Trophy, North City, Upper Hutt, Hutt District and Petone-Eastbourne will now play off in the top-four section for the Trophy.     

Upper Hutt had a decisive victory over Naenae by 182 runs. The highlight was a hat-trick by Craig James - dismissing Shane Brockelbank, Ollie Newton and Sam Outtrim. Naenae were set 289 to win but could only score 106. Jason McKenzie led the way for Upper Hutt, taking 4 for 32.

Wainuiomata earned a 40 run first innings lead over Petone-Eastbourne but they were then dismissed for 75. Kieran Butler took 4 for 27 as the combined side then got their target six wickets down.

North City and Hutt District drew their match. North City  took their first innings to 218 giving them a lead of 57. Hutt then made 276 for 6 with Fraser Colson scoring 70 and Ian McPeake getting an unbeaten whirlwind 61. He hit seven sixes and two fours. Then he took 6 for 42 as Norths finished the match at 143 for 7.

Johnsonville had an early finish against Easts Reserves. Easts were 43 for 5 overnight but only managed to get to 94. Hudson’s 6 for 41 gave Johnsonville a win by an innings and 39 runs.

North City and Hutt District drew their match. North City  took their first innings to 218 giving them a lead of 57. Hutt then made 276 for 6 with Fraser Colson scoring 70 and Ian McPeake getting an unbeaten whirlwind 61. He hit seven sixes and two fours.
