ICC Women's World Cup

ICC Women's World Cup 2009 in Australia

INTERVIEW: White Ferns batsman Sara McGlashan looking ahead

On how the tournament is going…

“It is going well, even though we lost on Saturday, and it was good to get through the pool games without a defeat. There are always things you can work on but it is going well.”

On India match…..

“India will be a big game. We played against them and lost to them in the warm-up game and they will be on a high after beating the Aussies so it will be a matter of making sure we know what we need to do on the day.”

On competition so far….

“It is really good to see how Pakistan have been doing and the standard of the women’s game is a lot higher and there is a lot more depth as all eight teams can compete against each other. It is good to see the odd upset happening.”

On her family cricket connections….

“There is a strong history of cricket through the Mother’s side of my. family, as my Grandfather played for Central Districts and then my brother playing, so I am guessing it is in the genes.

“It has been a big part of my life and it is something that has been a focus of the schools that I went to as I made sure that I went to sporting schools. Right from a youngster I have been involved in the game.”

On playing cricket with her brother….

“We did play backyard cricket together, but I’m not sure how much of a go I really got. I would go to the training which Granddad used to take and I would be running around picking up the balls. It wasn’t until I went to primary school that I really started to play and I have played ever since.”

On what it means for a brother and sister to represent their country at cricket…

“It is very special for the family. I am really pleased for him and for him to take the opportunity. I haven’t been able to see much of it but it sounds like he has performed pretty well in the one-day games that he got to play and it is something Mum and Dad are finding hard to get used to in all the sport that is on and that we have managed to play on the same days.

“My parents arrive on Tuesday morning so they will be here for the India match and they are then here through to the end so it will be really good to see them and hear how Pete has been going back home.

“They were able to go to Wellington and see him debut which was good, as a debut is always a special moment, so it was good that they were able to see that. For the other games they were watching on television.”

On the growing profile of women’s cricket….

“It is very exciting the profile that the game has had now that the game is under the ICC and it has really boosted things back home. The support we have been having from the increased interest in the televised games has been really big for us back home.

“There is a lot of media interest and having the games on television, really adds to the profile of the games. It is a well supported event and we are all getting really well looked after at training and at the grounds.”

On playing India….

“It is always a well fought match when you play the Indian girls and they are similar to us in terms of the pace and spin bowlers that they have. The girls do enjoy playing them and hopefully we will have a really good match on Tuesday.

On reaching the final…..

“We have tried to stay focussed on each game as it comes along and not get ahead of ourselves and just make sure we approach each game as it comes, but playing in the final is in the back of our minds.”
