Hutt Valley High School are the 2012 CricHQ Premier Youth Grade champions, beating defending champions Scots College in the final at the Petone Recreation Ground on Monday.

In a low scoring final, originally scheduled for Sunday but postponed a day due to inclement weather, Scots College were dismissed for just 77 and HVHS reached their winning total with 6 wickets in hand.

Mitchell Blucher was the chief destroyer for HVHS, taking 5 for 13 off nine overs of match-winning bowling. Steven Carter, with 2 for 21 off 8.1 overs, Nishant Desai with 2 for 7 off 7 overs and Myles Price Moor with 1 for 13 off 5 overs kept the heat on at the other end as Scots College were bowled out in 37.1 overs.

Carter struck first to have Scots at 9 for 1 at the end of the second over, before Blucher ripped through the rest of the top and the middle order to have Scots at 18 for 5 after just seven overs. The damage done, Scots kept their innings alive for another two hours. No batsman reached double figures, however, and the top score was extras with 32.

After a cautious start, HVHS then found themselves in desperate trouble at 23 for 4, with opening bowler Andrew Graham hitting his straps and whipping out four batsmen in the space of as many overs. He finished with 4 for 33 off 10 overs.

But HVHS opening batsman Jarrod Pike dug in at one end and found support at the other in the form of Matthew Pike and together the pair guided them to their winning total in 23.2 overs. Jarrod carried his bat for 19 off 68 balls and Matthew finished unbeaten on 34 off 43 balls.

HVHS now turn their attention to representing the Wellington region in the Gillette Cup National Finals, starting this Friday at Lincoln University.

Scots College play Wellington College in the Premier Youth Grade Twenty20 final this coming Sunday, at Wellington College at 11.00am.

Short scorecard:

Hutt Valley High School 81- 4 (M Pike 34*, J Pike 19*; A Graham 4-33) beat Scots College 77 (T Rowe 9; M Blucher 5-13, S Carter 2-21, N Desai 2-7) by 6 wickets.
