MILO schools cricket tournaments mark 10 years

New Zealand Cricket and Nestlé New Zealand celebrate ten years of the MILO national primary school cricket championships next week, with the tournaments under way in Palmerston North on Monday.

The MILO Cup (boys) and MILO Shield (girls) competitions are the premier national cricket tournaments for Year 7 and 8 teams.

A total of 373 schools entered the competitions this year – 246 in the MILO Cup and 127 in the MILO Shield. Teams play throughout the year within each of the six Major Association regions.

The winner of the association with the most entries goes automatically into the national finals tournament. In both the MILO Cup and Shield that privilege this year once again goes to the winners from Canterbury.

Their runners-up and the other five association winners then played off against their adjacent associations to decide the other three finalists in each contest.  The finalists for 2009 are:

St Andrew’s College Preparatory School (Christchurch), Broadgreen Intermediate (Nelson), Bucklands Beach Intermediate (Auckland), Raroa Normal Intermediate (Wellington)

All four teams in the MILO Cup are making their first appearance at a MILO national finals tournament.

MILO Shield:
Heaton Normal Intermediate (Christchurch), Waimea Intermediate (Nelson), Viscount School (Auckland), Tawa Intermediate (Wellington)

In the MILO Shield all four teams have made finals appearances before and Viscount School will be hoping to add to their title from 2001.

The tournaments will be officially opened at Manawaroa Park, Palmerston North on Monday (December 7) at 9.15am, with the first day’s matches starting at 10.30am.

Matches in each competition will be played on 7 and 8 December at Manawaroa and Ongley Parks. On day one the four schools in the MILO Cup play a round of 35-over matches, while the MILO Shield teams play in 25-over matches. On day two, the winning teams from the first day contest the final, while the two losers play off for third and fourth places.

The draw for day one is:

St Andrew’s College v Bucklands Beach Intermediate
Raroa Normal Intermediate v Broadgreen Intermediate

MILO Shield:
Heaton Normal Intermediate v Tawa Intermediate
Waimea Intermediate v Viscount School
