Day one report
: Mark Gillespie top scored with 77 of 63 balls to top score for the Wellington Firebirds in their first innings total of 221 against the Canterbury Wizards in day one of their Plunket Shield match at Rangiora on Monday.
Gillespie struck 13 boundaries, including four sixes to lift the Firebirds out of trouble and help them post a competitive score after losing the toss and being inserted.
Gillespie came to the crease with the score on 126 for 9, and together with tail-end partner Andy McKay added 95 for the last wicket. Their 10th wicket partnership was a new record for Wellington against Canterbury, beating the previous best of 87 in the 1944-45 season.

Canterbury medium pacer Andy Ellis then took three quick wickets to leave the Firebirds in trouble at 83 for 5.
Grant Elliott and Luke Ronchi steadied momentarily with a 43 runs partnership for the sixth wicket, taking the score through to 125 for five but it was Ellis again who did the damage.
He picked up Elliott for 26, Ronchi for 17 and Harry Boam to complete a remarkable spell of seam bowling and finish with 6 for 58.
Gillespie then removed George Worker for a duck while McKay took the wicket of Shanan Stewart for three.
Peter Fulton (32*) and Dean Brownlie (53*) negotiated the rest of the day’s play and Canterbury will resume tomorrow on 91 for 2.
