ICC Women's World Cup

ICC Women's World Cup 2009 in Australia

FEATURE: A view from the stands - Peter Devine

It's great to be supporting and following The White Ferns in their quest for World Cup glory...

Australia has done an excellent job in creating and staging a strong media profile for this Women's Cricket World Cup event.

From the number of txts and calls we have received over here and having TV coverage in New Zealand,  this has also lifted awareness back home.

At the outset,I can't help but feel the Australia media appear to have decided it's an Aussie/England final, so it really set the NZ campaign off on the right foot with an upset win over Australia in the opening match.

Anything can happen in a final [ ask the Hurricanes]..so New Zealand is firmly focused on this goal despite a hiccup yesterday in the 31 run defeat to England.

The standard across the board is good-with the minnows[ SA, WI, Sri Lanka and Pakistan] all having players of genuine world class standard -although they lack the depth of the Big 4.

The grounds and facilities are all well prepared,  the locals very helpful.

There is a strong contingent of Kiwi Supporters who are enjoying the sun, a few beers and winding up the English supporters.

The White Ferns have all worked hard and have the genuine ability to win the tournament so fingers crossed.

We would love nothing more than to see Haidee Tiffen lift the World Cup next sunday.
