First Grade Wellington Collegians Living Legends team bowler Matt Lister took a spectacular double hat-trick (four wickets in four balls) on Saturday on the first day of his side’s two-day match against the Eastern Suburbs Pykers at Kilbirnie Park.
Lister, who has previously taken a hat-trick on Kilbirnie Park, made the most of his side losing the toss and beingsent into field under a blazing hot sun and on a rock hard pitch.
He came into the attack as the second change bowler with Easts one wicket down and starting to build their innings nicely in the favourable batting conditions.
In his fourth and the 17th over of the innings he struck.
He took his first wicket with the second ball, clean bowled. With the third ball he trapped the batsman LBW. With the fourth, who was the Easts' captain, he effected a caught behind. Hat-trick!
But he wasn’t done yet. With the fifth ball he clean bowled the fourth batsman to face up to him in the over. Double hat-trick!
From 1 for 44 at the start of the over, the Easts Pykers were now 5 for 44 at the end of it.
Two overs later he secured his fifth wicket and Easts were now 6 for 56.
However, with their number three batting well with the lower order, Easts staged a fight back, eventually dismissed for 178.
But not before Lister returned to the bowling crease and took another wicket to finish the innings with 6 for 39 off 13.1 overs.
In reply the Collegians Legends ended the day seven runs in arrears on 8 for 171 -– fittingly with Lister at the wicket and unbeaten on 7.
