Covers off cricket's vision for Hagley Oval

Canterbury Cricket has announced its plans for the development of Hagley Oval into an international ground.

Why Hagley?

  • Is currently a cricket venue and has been since 1866
  • It is in the centre of Christchurch & supported by visitor infrastructure
  • It will attract year round community use & doubles as community green space
  • Stable land
  • comprehensive existing cricket infrastructure
  • Close to transport links & plenty of parking for big games
  • Existing event precinct
  • Can accommodate sufficient spectators
  • Adds value to existing facilities & other sports can leverage
  • World–class broadcast vista
  • Can showcase Christchurch resilience and recovery
  • Supported by NZ Cricket with guaranteed international fixtures
  • An enhanced Hagley Oval will get regular quality international fixtures including the 2015 Cricket World Cup
  • The Oval takes up only 2% of Hagley Park
  • Does not restrict the ability of people to walk around the outside of Hagley, even on game day
  • Retractable lights means that the permanent lights would be the same height as lights already in place on Hagley for rugby and netball training. Downward focus and technology with the lights means no "spill."
  • A number of CCC parking buildings within a short walk to the ground, central location for public transport and the possibility of opening up the Polo Grounds for parking on match day

What the Community has told us:

Keep Hagley Public:

We propose full public access, no fences outside of match day, increased community cricket and non-cricket use, use for casual recreation and events, all grass surfaces, Council retains full control of the land

Keep Hagley Green:

We propose a grass bank, no buildings constructed other than the replacement of the existing pavilion

Minimize Built Infrastructure:

Pavilion located next to other buildings - recessed into the embankment and to contain public toilets and storage, no permanent sight screens, no gaudy signs

Keep Open Views:

Hagley Oval is intentionally partially segregated by buildings, hedges, parking and woodland to create an oval. We propose a green embankment to compliment the existing oval

Non commercialisation of the Oval

Canterbury Cricket and New Zealand Cricket are not for profit organisations reinvesting any money made back into the sport.  Hagley Oval has always been utilised for pay to view fixtures – this will continue but still be a very small percentage of the total use of the Oval.  There are a number of current events on Hagley that charge spectators.  There will not be permanent advertising hoardings or advertising signs on the Oval.
