Auckland take narrow lead in Provincial A

Auckland, Northern and Central record victories in round five

Auckland ‘s seven wicket victory over Otago saw them claim a one point lead after Wellington lost by 42 runs to Northern Districts in round  five of the Provincial A tournament at the New Zealand High Performance Centre in Lincoln.

The defending champions hold the top spot for the first time and now have only three rounds of Twenty20 matches separating them from back-to-back titles. They will however have to overcome Wellington in the process, who they face tomorrow afternoon in what will likely be a decisive match.

Today’s big upset sees Northern grab their third straight victory and gives them a chance of competing for the trophy as well. The other fixture saw Central defeat Canterbury by eight runs to claim their second win.

Northern’s 20 year-old Joe Carter was today’s top-scorer with 92, while Central’s Greg Hay again featured prominently with an unbeaten 90.

Auckland’s Donovan Deeble produced the most impressive display with the ball, claiming a five wicket-bag in his 8.5 overs for 33 runs.

Two Twenty20 rounds will be played tomorrow, while the final round will take place on Wednesday morning.
