Cricket Wellington Recruits Brent Arnel
Cricket Wellington has signed former ND seam bowler Brent Arnel as its Bowling Coach, with responsibility for specialist bowling advice across the High Performance programme. Arnel will also be available for a domestic playing contract in the 2013-14 cricket season.
Arnel will take up the role of Bowling Coach, a position which will see him work predominantly with the Firebirds during the season, and the wider CW representative players during the winter and pre-season period. The role is the first step into formal coaching for Arnel, as he looks to transition himself into a post-playing career.
Director of Cricket Robbie Kerr said that the recruitment of Arnel was a very positive step towards strengthening the Firebirds squad, as well as utilizing his coaching and experience for the development of representative players and teams. “We see Brent as playing a pivotal role in the development of our bowling stocks, from Firebirds and Blaze levels through to our youth representative teams and players. He has a tremendous work ethic and a real enthusiasm to develop a career in coaching. We’re all looking forward to his contribution to cricket in Wellington.”
Arnel captured 65 wickets across the three cricket competitions last season (Plunket Shield, Ford Trophy, and HRV Cup), and was the top-equal wicket taker in the Plunket Shield nationally, with 45 wickets alongside Wellington’s Mark Gillespie. He was also awarded ND Player of the Year for the 2012-13 season, the second year in a row he has won the top award.
Arnel is currently in the UK playing league cricket. He is expected to return to Wellington with his young family in early September.
