James Franklin has been announced as the HRV Twenty20 captain of the Hell Wellington Firebirds, with Stephen Murdoch captaining the Plunket Shield side for the 2012/13 domestic cricket season.
Franklin and Murdoch take over from previous captain Grant Elliott, who will continue to play a large leadership role within the team. He will be the vice-captain for the HRV Cup and Plunket Shield competitions. Captaincy of the Ford Trophy side will be decided upon later in the season.
Murdoch, who has always played for his home province, says he is really excited to be given the opportunity and it is something he has always aspired to.
Firebirds head coach, Jamie Siddons, says there is a good feeling in the side and is looking forward to working with Murdoch and Franklin in their role as captain.
Siddons also acknowledges the leadership contribution of previous captain, Grant Elliott.
“Grant will continue to play a leading role in the team this season. His experience as a captain and a top quality all rounder is invaluable. Elliott feels he needs to focus on his goal of representing New Zealand in the Black Caps and spend more time with his family”.
Elliott took over the captaincy reins from Matthew Bell and has led Wellington for the last 2 seasons. Elliott says he feels he can give more to the team in terms of performance and is looking forward to assisting Franklin and Murdoch in the season to come.
