NZC marks Canterbury earthquake anniversary

Players, officials and thousands of cricket fans will pay their respects to those who lost their lives on the anniversary of the Canterbury earthquake at Eden Park tomorrow night.

A minute’s silence will be held shortly before the BLACKCAPS match against South Africa to observe the occasion, with 185 young cricketers surrounding the ground to honour to the deceased.

There will also be 185 memorial ribbons produced that will be worn by official’s, dignitaries and players including the BLACKCAPS, White Ferns, South African and England women’s sides.

“It is a poignant occasion and extremely painful day for a lot of people,” said New Zealand Cricket CEO David White.

“The memory of the Christchurch earthquake is very central and important to NZC and we feel it is important to observe the anniversary.”

“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the terrible events of 22 February 2011.”
