Club cricket resuming this weekend

Wellington’s club cricketers have much to play for this weekend when the Wilkinson Premier Ewen Chatfield Cup resumes with the last round of matches.

Karori, Onslow and Taita will be playing this Saturday for the right to join confirmed top qualifiers Eastern Suburbs in the Ewen Chatfield Cup One-Day Final.

Karori, who go into this last round having suffered three consecutive losses in December, must beat Eastern Suburbs in the final round or the second Final spot will go to the winner of the Taita versus Onslow game.

The Ewen Chatfield Cup One-Day Final is on Sunday 27 January, with Sunday 10 February being the reserve day.

Down the table, four teams are still in the hunt for the remaining two Pearce Cup spots. Petone-Eastbourne, University, Wellington Collegians and Johnsonville are all chasing two of the six places in the two-day Pearce Cup competition alongside the top four.

Petone play University this weekend, with the winner guaranteed to be playing Pearce Cup while a Collegians win this weekend over Naenae Old Boys will also see them through. Johnsonville can still make it but require a bonus point win and Collegians to lose by a big margin.

Two-Day cricket starts on Saturday 19 January, where the top six play for the Pearce Cup and  bottom eight for the Hazlett Trophy. There is five rounds of Two-Day cricket, culminating in the three-day Pearce Cup Final over Easter.

Midweek Twenty20 club cricket resumes next Wednesday for the Wellington Section. Taita have qualified for the Final having won the Hutt Section.  There are two midweek games for the Wellington section to be played on Wednesday 16 and 30 January before the final takes place on Waitangi Day.

In the Premier Reserve grade, Eastern Suburbs have qualified for the final spot in the Hazlett Trophy, while the next best six clubs will contest the Alan Isaac Trophy.
