With the HRV Twenty20 finals weekend in Hamilton looming, five of the six Associations are in the hunt to get there. To be sure, there are plenty of possible permutations and it's going to be tight. With Net Run Rate splitting teams on equal points, there's certain to be some exciting action in the next six days for fans.
The Otago Volts' one run win over the Hell Wellington Firebirds, thanks to Ryan Duffy's cool-headed bowling in the final over at Dunedin's University Oval yesterday, put them four points clear at the top of the table.
Breathing down their necks are the SKYCITY Northern Knights, whose 29 run win over the Auckland Aces at Eden Park's Outer Oval yesterday has them in second place, with a game in hand, level on points with the Firebirds, who are in third place by virtue of Net Run Rate.
The luckless Canterbury Wizards have had four of their eight matches abandoned, but are still in with an outside shout of making third place, as do the Aces, while the Devon Hotel Central Stags will be playing for pride from here.
The HRV Twenty20 finals weekend places will be decided in the next six days, with the Knights looking to go top equal against the Aces on Friday night in Hamilton; should the Aces get up, they give themselves a great chance of making the finals.
The same day, the Wizards take on the Firebirds at Hagley Oval, with the home side needing a win to stay in the hunt, and the visitors looking to bounce back and strengthen their chances of a play-off appearance.
On Sunday, the Volts have a golden opportunity to seal their finals spot against the Stags at home, while the Wizards and Knights meet at Hagley Oval in a match that will also probably help shape finals places.
In the final match of regular season play, the Aces and Stags meet on Tuesday in Auckland - with only five games left in the season, who knows what will be on the line for the Aces at that stage.
