There’s a new star coming to light in the Auckland women’s cricket scene, and she’s certainly made a wave with some of her performances.
At 17 years old Katie Gurrey is one of the younger members of Auckland University CC’s premier women’s team, but she’s proved beyond doubt that she is more than capable of coping at such a level – a level at which many Auckland Hearts and White Ferns also compete.
Gurrey had a 2012-13 season to remember, breaking numerous records with the bat and also contributing considerably with the ball.
One of many highlights was a record setting 225 not out in a One Day game. Those who thought it was a one-off were proved wrong though, with Gurrey also making scores of 187 not out and 145 not out in the same season.
Equally as impressive was an unbeaten partnership worth 387 with former White Fern Ingrid Conin-Knight. It was the biggest partnership in the club’s history at female or male level. She then turned around and added four wickets with her bowling to cap off a remarkable match.
She finished as one of the leading wicket-takers in the competition, despite being the team’s first choice wicket-keeper as well - a true all-rounder.
Her talents are undeniable and with time on her side, she is sure to keep improving - a very exciting prospect for New Zealand Women’s Cricket
Keep a look out for the name Katie Gurrey.
