The State Canterbury Wizards have chalked up their first win in the State Twenty20 competition after beating the State Northern Knights by four wickets in a low scoring match at QEII park in Christchurch.
Chasing the modest target or 119 the Wizards didn’t have it all their own way being 88 for five at one point but managed to knock off the runs with nine balls to spare.
Johann Myburgh was again Canterbury’s highest scorer with 36 off 34 and Kruger van Wyk hit 23 off 25.
The experienced Joseph Yovich did his best to get the Knight back in the game with three for 23 but there just weren’t enough runs on the board to defend.
Spinner Bruce Martin was useful taking took two for 25.
Earlier, Northern found batting tough and were five for 17 before BJ Watling, batting at six, struck 48 off 41. Kane Williamson was next in and next best with 30.
Michael Davidson was outstanding for the Wizards going for only nine runs and taking two wickets off his four overs. Andrew Ellis took two for 21.
After two rounds the current domestic one-day champions are yet to register a Twenty20 win and at the bottom of the table.
