England beat White Ferns by 37 in first Twenty20

The White Ferns opened their winter tour with a 37 run loss to England in the first Twenty20 International at Chelmsford.

Chasing a hefty 151 to win, the White Ferns started sharply with Aimee Watkins and Sara McGlashan hitting 24 and 25 respectively and looked on track at 47 for one but when they were undone by the spin of Danielle Hazell the pursuit fell away.

Nicola Browne and Liz Perry staged a late fight back, both clearing the rope in a 28 run partnership but when they were dismissed off consecutive balls by nineteen year-old tweaker Danielle Wyatt the rest of the line up crumbled to be 113 all out.

It was the spin of Holly Colvin, Wyatt and Hazell that did most of the damage as they took six wickets for 53 runs between them.

Earlier, Charlotte Edwards was the mainstay of the England innings with a classy 46 from 50 deliveries.

The England captain was well supported by Claire Taylor who struck 32 off 34 as the pair put on 68 for the second wicket.

Some late hitting from Lydia Greenway (23 off 17) and Laura Marsh (18 off 10) propelled the total.
