Magicians cruise past Hinds

The Canterbury Magicians have soundly beaten the Central Hinds thanks to some good bowling and a fine batting display by their top order.

Opting to bat first, the Magicians lost opener Janet Brehaut early but quickly recovered as they put on 93 for the second wicket.

Once again Francis Mackay was brilliant for Canterbury as she hit an unbeaten 57 from 58 deliveries. With the form she has been in White Fern’s coach Gary Stead will be hoping that she carries that form through to the international season. But she wasn’t the only one to perform for the defending champs, Captain Amy Satterthwaite also bringing her 50 up off just 35 deliveries.

Mandie Godliman scored a quick-fire 23 to help take the Magicians to 146 for two from their 20 overs.

It was a tough time with the ball for Central, many of the bowlers being taken to. Kate Broadmore was the most economical though, her four overs going for just 20 runs.

In reply the Canterbury bowlers proved to be too good for the Hinds. Rachel Priest (14) and Sara McGlashan (10) made starts for their team, but couldn’t push on to big scores.

With their two most experienced batsmen gone, Central were unable to form a partnership and lost wickets regularly.

At the end of their 20 overs the Hinds were well off the pace and were stuck on 69 for seven.

Kelly Anderson carried on her fantastic form with the ball, bowling her three overs for five runs and taking two crucial wickets. In the end Canterbury were convincing victors by 77 runs.
