Canterbury claim first win

Canterbury got their first win in the Provincial A tournament on day two, beating Otago by six wickets at Lincoln University, Lincoln.

Otago made 215 in the first innings, before being dismissed after 47.1 overs. In reply Canterbury were led brilliantly by Keryn Ambler, who scored 123 not out to lift them to victory in the 44th over.

The opener was the only player in the side to go past 30, but a fine display of controlled aggression and marvellous stroke-play saw him bring up his century and give the hosts their first victory of the tournament.

He needed only a little support and he found it in the likes of Henry Nicholls (29) and Cole McConchie (18).

No one had an answer for Ambler, but Blair Soper was the best of the Otago bowlers, picking up two wickets in his eight overs for 29 runs.

Earlier, opener Jesse Simpson (64) and number five Darren Broom (91) had done the majority of the work for their side to help them surpass 200.

Sadly for them few others contributed during the rest of the innings, with Iain Robertson (17) and Greg Knowles (21) the only other two to offer any real contribution.

In the end they were undone at the start of the 48th over, with Matt McEwan taking three wickets and two others taking a brace.
