New Zealand Cricket’s National Under 19 tournament began in 1996/97 as previously the age group was under 20.
This year the tournament will be played at Te Atatu Park, Auckland from 15-21 December 2009.

The competition begins with a nearest neighbour three day match played between neighbouring Major Associations before the teams take park in the tournament section of the competition.
The teams play five one day matches culminating in a finals series on the last day when the teams ranked one to six play as follows: 1 v 2, 3 v 4, 5 v 6 with the winner of the 1 v 2 match declared the winner of the national under 19 competition.
The NZ Under 19 team to compete in the ICC Under 19 World Cup being played in New Zealand in January 2010 will be named at the end of the tournament.
