New Zealand Cricket’s National Under 17 tournament began in 1996/97 as previously the age group was under 18.
The tournament is hosted on behalf of New Zealand Cricket by Hawke’s Bay Cricket and this season's tournament is played at Harry Barker Reserve in Gisborne from 12 -20 January 2010.

The format for the 2009/10 competition consists of three rounds of two-day matches, followed by two rounds of limited over matches. Points from limited over matches are to be added to those earned in the two-day matches when determining the tournament winner. Should two or more teams accumulate the same number of points; the tournament trophy for the winner will be shared.
